Prototyping using Excel - Alternative to TutorSpree

Last week, I was sitting with a friend of mine, enjoying a drink talking about my previous Post. And during the discussion it was felt that, by leaving an idea half way, I am not completely ideating and I should try to provide alteast some sort of prototype and I agreed.

So here it is the prototype for tutorspree alternative Teacher Spree (Hahaha). This is what the application intend to do.A student can create account and so is a teacher. Teacher adds a course and publish the schedueles. Students search for course, teacher based on location and contact the teacher for the same. Students can create groups and publish the same for others to search and join. The groups are searched by teachers and teachers may compete to offer classes by providing discounts. Today, We will only look at the main pages. More specifically only at

1) Login page
2) Search page
3) Profile page
4) Group Page

Tools used
1) Note Pad (Free)
2) MS Excel.

A note about Excel.

I have created prototype completely using excel. as i was not able to attach the workbook here, i have taken the screen shots and pasted it here. Excel is an excellent tool for prototyping, creating the logos, creating buttons and many other basic stuff. In fact you could also use excel as a small db, and write some macros to create working prototype of your ideas. I often use excel for quick visual feel. I can write a complete blog on that .

Details

1) Home page.
This page will provide a user to create an account and also for a user to login using his username and password.  We will combine the signup and login option for both student and teachers. A person can anytime decide to teach and let others know about it by turning on a flag via his profile page. The reason for combining both users into one is because, a person who is teaching may also want to learn from others. Also it simplifies the login mechanism. at the top of the page ( not sure if u can read it) there is an link which on click will provide login div box (not implemented as i cannot do that in excel.)

Also Home page can also be used by the users to see the current activity in different category like teachers, courses and groups etc.

2. Search Results

The beauty is searching for a skill is going to give you results based on categories like teachers (who are available), courses, quiz available etc.

3) Create Course Page
A teacher could create a Course page. Once a Course is created, people can search for the course and get the teachers details. For each course, the teacher will publish schedules (next and future schedule). Students can use this to plan their classes and join the same.

4) Profile Page
Basic profile page, for  student. We can create similar one for teachers with a view for the course offered and the schedules completed along with reviews.

5) Create Group - Any body can create a group. Idea behind the group is to create a small pool of people who want to learn some skills in a given schedule so that together they can ask for deals with teachers. For teachers, they can juzz search for each group (based on location) and based on the size, offer discounts.

6) Group Page - You can visit any group page and join the group.

I have left out many other details. But that could be done easily. May be if i get some time, i will implement the same and share the code. As i am currently learning python, I will choose following.
1) Django
2) Mysql
3) Jquerry

I think using excel for prototyping is cool. If you guys know any other method, please share.
